    Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui, is famous for it’s 887 monumental statues, called Moai which were created by the early Rapanui people. The name ‘Easter Island’ was given by the island’s first recorded European visitor, Jacob Roggeveen who encountered it on Easter Sunday 1722.
